The myth of the quiet month
Everyone assumes August is the easy month. Half the team is away, the diary looks lighter, and there’s a vague expectation that things will simply… slow down. But if you’re a leader, you know the reality is rather different.
The decisions don’t pause. The problems don’t take annual leave. And with fewer people around to share the load, you’re often carrying more — not less.
The hidden pressure of a reduced team
When your team is depleted, your buffer disappears. The colleague who normally catches an issue before it becomes a crisis? On a beach somewhere. The person who manages upwards so you don’t have to? Out of office until September.
That leaves you exposed — making judgement calls with less information, less support, and less time to think. And doing it whilst trying to appear calm and in control, because that’s what leadership looks like, isn’t it?
What good leaders do differently in August
The best leaders don’t just survive August — they use it. With fewer meetings and less noise, it can actually be one of the most valuable thinking months of the year, if you’re intentional about it.
Use the space to reflect on what’s working and what isn’t. Have the conversations you’ve been putting off. Think about Q4 before Q4 arrives and demands your full attention.
The one thing you can’t afford to ignore
Your own stress levels. Leaders who arrive at September already running on empty set themselves up for a very difficult final quarter.
August is not the time to push through. It’s the time to be quietly strategic — about your business, and about yourself.
